ETW Meetup #1: Beautifying Liberty State Park

For our first ever ETW meetup, we decided to join Jersey Cares  to help out Friends of Liberty State Park  prepare the ferry terminal area of the park for spring. It was windy and cold, but we stuck it out. Let’s do volunteer work indoors next time! :)

Note to self… we need to take group pictures!!

Announcing the Enrich The World Movement with the 17 for 17 Enrich-a-thon

Shrutika and Karen need your help!  On December 8th we are kicking off our Enrich The World Movement!  Join us or sponsor our 17 schools in Honduras by donating here: www.enrichtheworld.org

The Enrich The World movement is our effort  to spread goodness through empowerment and appreciation.  On this day, we are planning to take to the NY Metro area streets to inspire and be inspired.  The goal is to spread awareness about our non-profit Enrich the World and raise funds for our programs involving 17 schools in an impoverished area in Honduras (La Botija – The Hidden Treasure). Believe it or not, we aim to complete 17 enriching activities in one day!

Please contact us if you would like to participate in our enrich-a-thon and support wonderful organizations with a day of volunteerism and contribution.

La Botija Science Fair – A Success!

The La Botija Science Fair was held on Friday, October 1st with 12 of 17 schools
participating.  School District supervisor of San Marcos attended the event as well as a number of local politicians.  The students and teachers who participated were very happy with the event and overwhelmingly considered it a success.  The young students defended their experiments eloquently (first ever experience of this magnitude!) and the invited guests were nicely surprised at the talent/knowledge of the students of the protected area.  Local channel 16 in San Marcos videotaped the event and it was aired on television!  — reported by Fernando Tercero (translated from Spanish)

Director, Karen Chung’s commentary on her month of February 2010 in La Botija

I have travelled extensively around the world but nothing prepared me to live in the thick of countryside Honduras.  My first taste of the unpredictability of Honduran life came when the bald tire of our vehicle deflated in our 3rd hour of driving from Tegus to the ETW Center — just 30 minutes away from our destination.  As we struggled with the car jack, four young Hondurans on their way home stopped and helped us for an hour via flickering flashlight to replace the blown tire with another bald – but sealed tire.  Throughout my 3 weeks in Honduras, I encountered numerous other setbacks but numerous generous and genuine locals as well.  There is no doubt life in La Botija is difficult with limited and poor resources yet also so reassuring to know that the people (especially the youth) here are eager to assist, starving to learn and brimming with curiosity of the world around them.  I am deeply honored to be a part of Enrich The World.  It’s amazing how much has already been accomplished.  I know the best has yet to come.
