Enrich The World Meetup (July) – Cleanup Parvin State Park
On a lovely Friday, Enrich The World and our Haitian friends chipped in to clean up the beautiful Parvin State Park in Pittsgrove, NJ. We walked, groomed and picked litter up from the popular Lake Trail and encountered numerous morning walkers, kayakers, picnickers and anglers. Due to budget cuts, the park service has not been able to attend too this trail in a month! We were quite a happy sight for Vince, the superintendent of the park. At the end, Thaylord collected the most trash, Georgeton collected the most number of bottles and I had the most fun with the garbage grabber!

Enrich the World Meetup (June) – Soup Kitchen with Meir Panim Jerusalem, Israel
Enrich the World’s second ON LOCATION volunteer event was in the Jerusalem soup kitchen with the wonderful Israeli Meir Panim organization. Although there was a language barrier, it was obvious the wall-to-wall smiles and abundant “TODA”s (thank yous) from other volunteers and from clients meant we were doing something right. We had volunteers who took time off from their busy day from all walks of life with a huge heart to do something for the less fortunate. Truly there were no barriers nor boundaries for kindness and compassion. TODA RABA (thank you very much) to Ed, Mohani and Ohad for volunteering with Enrich the World today!!! Enrich The World Meetup #3 (Apr 2011): Liberty State Park Earth Day
Our latest Enrich the World Meetup was held in the beautiful Liberty State Park overlooking the New York skyline and the Statue of Liberty. Hudson County Improvement Authority (HCIA) held the Annual Earth Day celebration inside the historic terminal at Liberty State Park. HCIA mission is to provide wide range of services to the residents of Hudson County including solid waste management, recycling, transportation etc. They offer educational programs to businesses and schools about recycling and have collected 3 million pounds of hazardous waste under the Household Hazardous Collection program!
On Saturday Apr 16, 2011, HCIA organized 5k run/walk along with tons of family friendly art activities and contests. We assisted the HCIA by managing the ‘Pledge Tree’ booth. The idea was that each person will write his/her pledge on a leaf. Each leaf represented a pledge to save the planet in any way like conserving water, recycling, using less plastic etc. At 10am, we started with a bare tree and by 2pm we had a living tree full of ‘green’ pledges!!! Everyone from children to working moms to retired people, came forward and wrote their pledges. It was a cold, rainy and windy day but the enthusiasm I saw especially in the kids writing their pledges made me believe we still have Hope that our next generation is prepared to enrich the world!
Some of my favorite pledges:
“I pledge to use organic cleaning products” – by a 10yr old
“I will not throw garbage on the floor” – by a 6yr old
“Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Together we can make the world a better place to live” - by a 10yr old
“I will shut the tap off while brushing my teeth” – by a 9yr old
“Recycle by creating arts/crafts from trash” – school teacher. She had created an easter egg basket using old wire hangers.
What is your pledge this year to make the planet greener?

Enrich The World Meetup #2 (March 2011)
It was rainy and cold this evening, so luckily we chose to be volunteers indoors this time! Hoboken Shelter is a community-focused organization which seeks to feed, clothe, house and provide services to the needy to become independent. We prepped and served food to about 100 people. It was nice to provide a warm meal in the midst of the rain and cold outside. Thanks to all the volunteers who showed up!! See you in April for all the Earth Day events!

Honduras calling USA
On February 19th Karen and Tom were able to talk to each other via satellite internet. Tom on the ground in Honduras and Karen in New Jersey. A big step for us at Enrich the World. The beginning steps to open a whole new world to the impoverished students and communities we work with in Honduras, along the border with Nicaragua. Enrich the World will begin creating new opportunities real soon.
